One year after leaving our winter campground in Yuma, AZ early we decided to meander on down the Texas - Mexico border to the Texas gulf coast. It would allow us to use numerous military campgrounds along the way. This was the smallest one which also housed the smallest campground.
Laughlin AFB is a smallish pilot training facility with great year round weather for pilot training. When you enter the main gate you just drive straight down the main road to the FAMCAMP. There are just 20 sites but they are all very large, FHU sites, with fence dividers between every site.
The base houses an exchange, commissary, bowling alley, movie theater, fast food contractor - McDonalds - golf course and base housing. Off base there is another recreational facility located right on Lake Amistad which also has RV parking sites but not FHU - no sewer. There is a boat launching area and mooring. Rental cabins are also available.
We spent a week at the Del Rio location and did side trips to all the points of interest including down dirt roads to an Indian Casino.
I’m showing all of our pictures of our camp site as it’s quite unique. We were on a corner site which made it appear larger than the rest.
You can click on any of the pictures to make them larger.
There are a lot of aircraft on display. This one is found on the road entering the base right after going past the main gate. Both sides of the road have similar displays and there is a place to pull off and walk around and take pictures.
This one shows the golf course in the background.
This one is found at a traffic circle in the housing area.
This is a picture of a few of the cabins for rent on the AFB campground at Lake Amistad.
Here are a couple of pictures with Lake Amistad in the background.
